  Caravan Insurance Explained

We have put together this guide to help explain some of the elements of a caravan policy. You should always satisfy yourself that the policy offers you the cover that you require at a price you are happy with. There are a number of ways to reduce caravan insurance premiums.

Make sure you read the policy through to ensure you understand what is and is not covered. Its a bit late when you need to make a claim to find that you are a not covered - an expensive mistake.

If you can't understand what the policy is saying i.e its written in insurance gobledegook then you can either call the insurance company for clarification or move on an get a quote from another provider.

We have detailed a few things that should look at in a caravan policy:

New for Old

Many Caravan Insurance Policies will offer some new for old cover if you have a new or newish caravan. Some policies this extends to caravans up to 5 years old or more but most are one or two years. Well worth thinking about if you have a caravan thats four years old for example.

Cover

Check the level of cover on the policy. Assume nothing, some policies do not cover accidental damage. Make sure you understand the level of cover available.

Caravan Age

If your caravan is over 20 years of age expect to pay a little more with some caravan insurance providers. The reason for this, as with car insurance, is that older caravans are not build to the same safety standards as new and are potentially more likely to be in an accident. Another factor is that often older caravans are not serviced as often [more info on caravan servicing]

Stolen Caravans and theft cover

Most caravan insurance policies insit on a level of security in order to provide insurance. Unsullay this is a wheel clamp (some times two for twin axles), and a hitch lock. The security requirements to vary from caravan insurer to insurer so make sure you check your poolicy carefully.

European Use

Some policies cover European cover as part of the policy others charcge for it as an extra. If you are planning to take your caravan to Europe then its worth shopping arround to get cover included. If you do not plan to do this you might be able to save money by getting a policy without this cover

Personal Belongings

Most policies allow you to insure the contents of your caravan under the policy. However, they do charge for this and if you have contents insurance much of your belongings may be covered by your home insurance [get home insurance quote]

Who can tow

Some policies ask you to name the drivers who will tow your caravan. Other caravan policies allow any driver. Think what cover you need and shop arround based on this.

Public Liability

Make sure you get this cover. If your caravan rolls down a hill and kils or hurts someone and you are liable it can be very expensive. Most policies cover this but always check.

Excess

You can reduce the cost of your caravan insurance by opting to take a higher excess.

Exclusions

All policies have exclusions. They will vary from policy to policy. Make sure you reasd them and fully understand what is and is not covered by your policy
